First Love

< Back to blog index

I love to be busy, I’m a doer, my idea for a rest is building something! and there’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s so important that amongst all the busyness of life that we make sure we keep the main thing the main thing. There’s an amazing warning in Revelation verse 2, which as a person who loves to ‘do’ and to be busy I’ve recently taken special notice of.

Revelation 2 vs 2-4
'I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.'

What a shock! despite that glowing report the church in Ephesus that this letter was addressed to had lost their first love. Recently I was spending some time song writing, or at least trying and no matter what I tried nothing was working.

To cut a long story short, in the end I gave up and just spent some time with God. I simply went for a walk and talked with God, no agenda, no shopping list just simply being with Him. I had a great time and when I got back to the studio I just began to write. The song I began to write that day is called ‘First Love’.

Our God is a jealous God (Exodus 20) and He should be first in our lives. It’s not rocket science but I’m sure you’ll agree that life, busyness, work, family even church and the things we’re doing for God can so easily overtake our walk with God.

My prayer is that I will never take my salvation for granted. That I will always live in awe and gratitude of the fact that Jesus Christ chose to die on a cross because He chose love, He chose me. One of the lines in the songs says, ‘I will give you my devotion’. ‘Devoted’ is an amazing word which also contains the meaning ‘consecrated’ which is to be set apart for a single use or purpose.

Our lives have been set apart to bring glory and honour to our Saviour Jesus Christ. That is the Highest calling we could follow. We now have the opportunity to put Him first to give our lives to honour His sacrifice, let’s make sure He is our First love.

I agree with Jock, God has to be 1st in our lives. Our priority. We must worship and honour Him with our lives daily. and be a living sacrifice for His glory and name, cos He loved us 1st and died on the cross for us cos He loved us.
