Birdsong and Gross National Happiness

< Back to blog index

Heya,

Just before Easter my family and some  friends spent a week on a farm in Scotland - here's Gracie with a rabbit....pretty great place, near a beach - spent the week making fires and eating meat. Powerful..

The farm we stayed at was right near a bird santuary and the noise they made was pretty awesome -  quite a racket, they just didn't stop singing, all kinds of varieties and sounds and at all times of the day and night

..got me thinking why do i never hear the birds sing where i liveω Are they there or have i tuned them outω What i tend to hear when its quiet at the end of the day is for example, a  Subaru two streets down or the distant hum of the M62, the washing machine, cats fighting etc - but no birds......i felt kinda sad when i came home...

Apparently the king of Bhutan coined the phrase Gross National Happiness - thats how you measure happiness statistically, by the way and high up on the scale is the amount of birdsong  in your life - this has a direct effect on your well being, apparently!

You gotta love wikipedia.... for all of your most random questions!

Made me think about how we have to tune out the din of humanity sometimes and  listen to whats good and natural that God has put all around us.. Its such a noisy world and being a muso i like it like that, but sometimes, selah and listen to Gods music, ehω

Anyway, tweet tweet

lots of love - we got some exciting times coming up so stay tuned!

Matt

Hi Matt, I love that GNH index Matt, slowly these measures are finding entrance into economics as opposed to de regulars (gdp). Next year my thesis will probably have to do something with prosperity of countries and I'm eager to find some significant determinants! thanks for the worship podcast , blesses our world
